MAD4RACKETS.COM BRITISH CLOSED RACKETLON CHAMPIONSHIPS – FULL REPORT, BY KEITH LESSER

It’s a beautiful day!
A distinguished and impressive event, Stuart Websdale acted as Tournament Director and put in a performance of a lifetime. Investing much of his time in British Racketlon, Stuart must be commended for this astonishing job. It is no secret the UK aim to be the biggest and best racketlon nation in the world. 30 new players participated in the event. Buzzing and enthused, all players are ready to launch themselves into racketlon stardom.

O’Donnell was Invincible
In the main events O’Donnell, Lawrence, Whitehouse and Hogg won through for top prize. O’Donnell needed three points in the final, this he achieved with ease against a battling Calum Munro. John, sharp from the Czech Open, was outstanding. Undefeated at squash all weekend, he did however manage to lose some badminton and table tennis. However, you had the feeling, a bit like when Magnus plays, that John was not going to lose. 21-7 in table tennis is a total that many better players would be happy with against the awkward pimpled customer Calum Munro. 16 points in badminton is more than most would muster. However, Calum’s 10 points in squash shows that the Scot is a future Veterans World Champion. In his win over Number Two Seed Websdale in the semi, Calum again got double figures in squash and showed excellent stamina and fitness.

Kirstie Leach, One for the Future!
The ladies runner-up, a novice in table tennis, showed her credentials with a close match against English International Natalie Lawrence. Kirstie is a highly ranked tennis player and pushed Natalie well into the tennis and one would estimate Kirstie making a significant impact on the international stage, 2006 should see further representation in the World’s Top Ten. Natalie is improving and squash coaching sees her getting stronger and stronger. Table Tennis Coaching on April 9th at the newly formed Heston Racketlon Club could see Natalie coming to Belgium to WIN.

Vicious Squash Genius!
Once again brutal athlete Richard Whitehouse came off a squash court with devastating effect. Ken Bound, himself a squash specialist, pronounced “he was too good”. For such a mild mannered, friendly chap, Richard certainly possesses some clinical racket ability. If he manages to practice table tennis in the next couple of months he is the best in the world, end of story. Ulf Bredburg is a better tennis player, but he should be worried, very worried. Richard Thomson v Magnus Eliasson - 13-21- Table Tennis (Vienna) “The Ball Came at me like a SNAKE”. This same quote was exclaimed by a mystery racketlon player over the weekend of The British Championships. Can Whitehouse deliver the snake? Can he take gold?

Roland Leigh will Step up To Elite
Class B winner and newcomer looks to participate in Belgium. An excellent badminton, squash combination sees a parallel perhaps to Stuart Websdale when he first participated. 21-9 over Selwyn Walmsley in the final at squash is palpitating – Selwyn is a club first team squash player! 4 nets in table tennis didn’t gave Selwyn the start he needed. 21-0 would be more accurate than the eventual 21-7. Rob Conber works at the Next Generation Centre alongside Nigel Hunter. Hunter’s win over Matt Schlotter was the best tennis match of the weekend. The professional tennis coach came out on top 21-17. A further victory over Hogg JNR suggests Hunter poses trouble to certain profiles. Rob himself played 4 matches. Feeling dazed and confused, Rob put his first racketlon experience into words. “I had a shower and went to bed”. He lost a gumi to bronze finisher Niall Munro and won a gumi against badminton supreme Gareth Shaw. Twice in one weekend, Rob also fancies the trip to Belgium.

Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around ...
The best match in Class C was runner-up Ed Qualtrough delivering a gumi victory over Table Tennis and Tennis Newcomer Nick Corking. Gareth Preece won the Class C and is a solid allrounder, playing mainly tennis. Ed debuted at Heston last October. Qualtrough evolving from the Sheffield University Table Tennis Club Hall of Fame has improved his three lesser sports immensely.

Foulds will break the World’s Top 20 in 2006
First described by Ray Jordan as “Chris Noakes without the tennis” – John Foulds looks set to lay this comparison to rest. Here are some facts:

  1. He has played badminton 36 times in 2006.
  2. 21-13, 17-21, 15-21 v O’Donnell – John was also losing the badminton at one point. John F is now strong at the first three sports.
  3. Foulds now legitimately can challenge Websdale, Jackson and Kerins for the England Number Three Spot.
  4. Foulds may goto Finland to boost his World Ranking.
  5. He had injury trouble in Prague and thus did not perform to the best of his ability.
“I’ll tell you one thing, it’s always better when we’re together”
Thanks again to everyone. Let us grow as one. What a team, what a tournament, what a sport.

1st March - A Historic Moment in UK Racketlon!
March 1st is the day when a racketlon representative (Keith Lesser) was invited by English Table Tennis Association Development Officer (Diccon Gray) to attend a racket sports meeting with the national development officers also from The Lawn Tennis Association, England Squash and Badminton UK. Unfortunately, a badminton representative was not in attendance. However, racketlon was introduced and tabled and received very warmly indeed. Fred Perry was introduced as the original "racketlon star".
We even talked about Stefan Edburg, Matts Kallberg, Doug Struthers, and plenty of other racket talents. Exposure to calander updates to avoid clashes, event stand promotion and website interaction and linking were some initial ideas discussed. Referees were also mentioned and The English Open this year will be applying through the appropriate channels for umpires in each of the four sports. This was even cited as a training and assessment opportunity for up and coming referees looking to gain experience.

Certainly, this future linking bodes well and the very fact that such conversations took place is a great stride forward for spreading the word of racketlon and creating mutually beneficial relationships between the five sports. A target is event stand representation at The 2006 English Open. Contact has been made regarding representation at retail villages for the big squash and badminton championships and budget/sponsorship permissing this is all stuff with huge potential. This is also correlated to contact with the events team at "Sport City" - The Manchester complex is a racketlon dream and discussions over coming months could mean a sensational event in the future.

1st March - Thurrock Doubles Championships

23rd April - Entries received from Keith Lesser, partnering Nick Macey.
Challenge so far comes from strong badminton and tennis combo Darren Kerins and Alistair Jones. Closing date is 40 days away, capacity 48 participants.

Enter on www.activeeurope.com where more information is available.

WWW.ACTIVEEUROPE.COM - THE NEW ENTRY SYSTEM WEBSITE FOR ENGLISH RACKETLON!

27th February - Entries, Entries, Entries
Nick Macey returns to competition. The most flamboyant racketlon player in history has re-surfaced from injury hell to compete in what will be one of the most spectacular competitions ever held on British soil, in the history of the exciting, young sport. Macey joins a very strong list of entrants and although currently outside the allotted seeded positions of 1. John O'Donnell, 2. Stuart Websdale, 3. Calum Munro and 4. Mark Jackson, you would not bet against Nick pushing all these rackastars all the way.

27th February - Heston, Heston, Heston.
See you there for practice on Sunday March 5th. 9 attendees on February 19th included 3 new players and the club is set to grow and grow. Even Nick Macey made the trip! David Lloyd members far and wide were astounded at his ability across all four racket sports. Expert table tennis coaching was available and enjoyed by all.

9th February - Heston Dates
19th Feb and 5th March 5PM-10PM. Come and practice at Heston David Lloyd Centre, £12 a person for non-members, free for members of David Lloyd.

Swimming, sauna and steam included. Table Tennis (we have our own net), badminton, squash and tennis courts are all booked.

8th February - West Midlands Next Generation - NICE!
A friendly tournament for members was run on 5th February. Stuart Websdale organised this alongside rackets manager Nigel Hunter. Stuart unfortunately injured his knee kickboxing the day before so was in hospital! English Open Director Keith Lesser did however, still get the opportunity to scout the centre and notes BIG improvements. No long and windy corriders like Heston, better and more value for money catering facilities, an extra badminton court and carpet tennis. Hunter himself finished 2nd in the event behind a mystery guest racketlon player (nicknamed the moose) defeating Lesser on the way in a close match. Nigel is a darkhorse in the British Championships displaying a "Stuart Foster" profile. A former full-time tennis player with decent badminton and squash and some canny pingis ability. Rob Comber, also a member of staff, finished 4th displaying top club standard at table tennis and badminton bowing out to Lesser by 2 points in half a racketlon match to 11 points.

7th February - Eastbourne Camp
18th/19th March more information to follow - the best place to practice before the British Championships. For overnight accommodation, please contact Tonia Mitchell on 01323 509802 or eastbourne.lodge@whitbread.com .

This is a pilot for the probable South of England Championships to be held at Eastbourne in July. Practice is free if staying over at the lodge.

Training will start Saturday afternoon and finish Sunday morning (a break in between is recommended). A small fee may be charged for court use if not a David Lloyd member or staying at the lodge.

7th February - Thurrock Doubles Tournament, April 23rd.
Pencil in April 23rd for this one day event. Active Europe will be used as a pilot for 3 competitions, 8 pairs capacity in each. Mens Doubles A, Mens Doubles B and Mixed Doubles. Every pair will get 3 matches in a Monrad system. EG 1st v 8th then winners play winners, losers play losers until everyone has a place 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. £23 a pair normal racketlon rules apply. Squash is conducted with half singles match each, the rest are played in a doubles format.

7th February - World Champs, maybe another year!
Sport City are fully booked in 2007 so now we will re-bid most likely in 2009. This makes Finland the new favourites to host the event next year.

The 2006 World Championships in Belgium in June is getting nearer and nearer! The website will no doubt be ready shortly.

26th January - 2007 World Championships Update!
Steve Flynn - Principal Events Manager is ready for a meeting. Racketlon at Sport City in Manchester is going to be HUGE.

26th January - New Calander!
Constant changes mean exciting developments for UK Racketlon. Possible events are popping up everywhere with Tom Harris in Cambridge and Mike Wallis in Bath the latest list to a range of possibilities to explore.

26th January - ActiveEurope.com partnership possibility!
Thanks to Sue Woods for this intrdoduction. Im looking to partner racketlon with this website. Here is some more information:

It is an online registration and sports events listing webite. It allows you to design the entry form, place adverts and information on their site and upload the entry list. It is pretty cool allowing a whole host of database management tools. It will cut out a lot of administration. They charge 10%, so about £3.50 an entry. I am really happy about this for the future because it should cut the time volunteers input into receiving entries, web updates and banking. All the foreign players can pay online (they have a shopping cart system - much better than paypal). This could shape the future of all tournaments. We wont have an entry form on Word as such it will all be done through the ActiveEurope System. With 237,000 users across Europe and 45,000 users subscribed to their mailing list, this could be a huge step forward for racketlon promotion. There is preliminary agreement to launch a racketlon focussed newsletter to their members, as part of the package.

26th January - Racketlon.co.uk refurbishment!
Watch this space! The main website will be refurbished in coming weeks.

26th January - Latest Entry News!
Lesser, Websdale, Jordan, Caves. Check more in coming days for complete list! According to Director Websdale "They are flooding in!".

26th January - Manchester Open
Preliminary agreement from Manchester David Lloyd Centre sees a possible tournament in May. Can anyone who may be interested in taking a role in organising this event or others email the "2006 British & Irish Tour" Co-Ordinator keithlesser@yahoo.com. Please volunteer if you can, the workload is not excessive for "smaller" British based events.

26th January - Racketlon Development
Diccon Gray (England Table Tennis Association Development Officer) tabled racketlon at an inter-racket meeting with the national development officers for each sport. This is an exciting development and racketlon is being put on the map. Diccon, himself is a possible competitor in the British Championships alongside ETTA Chief Executive Richard Yule. Both display good allround racket profiles.

26th January - Eastbourne Training Camp.
5th Feb date off. Later date will be announced in due course for the probable venue of the South of England Championships later in the year.

25th January - Tournament Progress!
Tom Harris is managing a Cambridge project and Mike Wallis is leading a Bath/Bristol event team. Hopefully, these events will come together later in the year.

25th January - Heston Racketlon Club Launch!

Dear All,

I am proud to launch the first training session of our new club.

Sunday 29/1/06 between 6-9pm. 2 courts per sport are booked at a cost off £12 per person who is not a member of David Lloyd. You can pay either on arrival or departure, reception will keep a list of players attending. There will be a group of players based in the multi-purpose sports hall...if this is your first racketlon experience, why not, come and have a go. I started off rubbish at three sports and now im addicted to improving!

Use of the swimming, sauna and steam room is also included.

See you there!

Keith
Ps. Please forward to anyone else you think may be interested.

25th January - Racketlon.com news story!
Click here for more info - An article compiled by Keith Lesser and Stuart Foster.

23rd January - Who will be the 1st British Champion?
Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
UKRACKETLON2005 group: - click here!

Leading the field currently are Calum Reid and Doug Struthers. Is former British Number One Dave Lazarus ready to come out of retirement? Will Reid (WR4) and Struthers (WR12) make the trip for a re-match from the 2005 World Championships in Vienna? Will ex-Commonwealth badminton champion Anders Nielson (Class B Champion at The English Open) show his ability to compete with the best of Britain? Will Ray Jordan or Mark Jackson get any votes?

Can World Championship silver medallist Scott Kennedy emulate his fantastic debut? John O'Donnell for sure also poses a mountanous threat.

17th January 2006 - Extracts from the 2006 Racketlon.com ***Press Release***
A 3rd large tournament for sure has been added to the UK calander and the British Closed Championships to be held on 1st/2nd April in the West Midlands should be a cracker and warm up for the England team players for the forthcoming World Team Championships in Belgium in June. This will provide a taster of the 2006 English Open tournament venue and we are hopeful of a good turnout.

Certainly, we will look to hold another competition in our most seasoned racketlon venue at David Lloyd Heston. The launch of a series monthly Club nights is a very exciting development as a pilot for other David Lloyd or branded clubs. The Heston Racketlon Club is coming!

Furthermore, we hope to breathe new life into the racketlon.co.uk website and with regular news and calander updates, UK Racketlon is set to grow and grow! For sure, we have already started the irresistable task of planning the proposed 2007 World Championships. This news has brought further joy to sports fans across the island, already ecstatic at the news of the 2012 Olympics.

2007 World Championships Breaking News Development - Already short listed Manchester Sport City zooms to the top of the list for what is likely to be the biggest ever racketlon event held on the globe. The venue for both The National Badminton Championships and The National Squash Centre (holding a series of huge squash competitions) - 7 courts, as well as an indoor tennis centre (6 indoor and 6 outdoor courts). Also, in close proximity to the Manchester City Centre, Sport City also hosts The City of Manchester Stadium (48,500 capacity) and The National Cycling Centre, this complex has huge potential for a racketlon event. Indeed, this is the very place where Stefan Adamsson spectated the British Squash Open last October and where the Commonwealth Games were held in 2002.

17th January 2006 - Racketlon.co.uk launches 2006 Racketlon Calander
Download here - Please note that while some events are concrete, others are proposals that we are hopeful of announcing in due course. All the IRF World Tour events are definite. The rest of the events range in status. I would estimate events will take place in Heston, Eastbourne and Dublin. I am hopeful of events in Carlisle, Manchester and Sheffield. The British Championships, The Scottish Open and The English Open are definitive.

Volunteers are needed to help drive some of these events. Could you help British & Irish Racketlon grow? Please send all messages regarding this calander to keith_lesser@gillette.com

16th January 2006 - Racketlon.co.uk launches The 2006 British Championships.
2005 certainly was a great year for British Racketlon and with the most successful English and Scottish Opens to date, the British Championships in April should further build on this platform. Further tournaments are due to be announced up and down the country in due course.
